Most mentioned Study Materials for PMP Exam

These are books and Podcasts most mentioned by PMP Aspirants in their Lessons Learned.
“My study plan was set in following order: 1) Read PMP Exam Prep as the first; 2) Study PMBOK 3) Very carefully study PMP Exam Prep 4) Test yourself, test yourself, test yourself,… My advice: do not start with PMBOK; it is too complicated for beginning.”
(Jiri Khun’s LL)

“Read the HeadFirst, answered the question on every chapter. Applied for PMP by December first week, Same time started reading PMBOK also, Now Iam able to understand some concepts and bought Andy Crowe book. It is really nice book explained the concepts at basic level. Finally decided to stick on only Andy and HeadFirst.” http://www.pmhub.net/wp/2011/02/a-mani-passed-pmp-exam-feb-18/

“I have one month and I started taking mock exams.I am shocked with my score, it was between 50 – 60% only. I read PMBOK again and again with glossary, underlined the important points. Draw my own diagrams.

Until first week of this month, Feb I revised Andy PMBOK & HeadFirst. I have taken the Mock exams listed below”

PMP Exam Prep, Eighth Edition: Rita’s Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam

I started the preparation with Rita’s book. I read each chapter and took the practice exams after each section. Took note of the questions where I was wrong and corrected my concepts. One good thing in Rita’s book is the explanation to the answers , which helped me to clarify several areas.

Rita Mulcahy’s PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software for the PMP Exam: Version

“I started getting over 70% and 2 weeks before the test i was hitting 80% on Rita’s tests. Never i did any test over 3 hours.  But this is not the case in the actual test.” http://www.pmhub.net/wp/2011/11/anil-vempati-pmp-lessons-learned-first-attempt-passed/

“After reading each chapter and answering the sample questions “on paper” I answered the  „PM FASTrack® PMP® Exam Simulation Software – V 6” Knowledge Area questions. There are cc. 80-150-240 pcs of sample questions in this program for each Knowledge Area. My results were between 65-80%. What I am trying to point out that it gave me much better results when I answered 35-40 questions on paper, than when I had to answer 100-130 questions on the computer. After 40-50 questions I had the experience that I have to read each question at least 2-3 times to understand what it really is all about. My mother language is not English. During my break sessions I used „Hot Topics PMP® Exam Flashcards – Sixth Edition” to memorize certain basic principles.”

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: PMBOK(R) Guide

“Glossary is an excellent way to revise for the exams. Try that as much as you can. If you have soft copy of many books try the glossary for PMBOK, Rita and then on the other books to verify your knowledge. Some words like “Tailoring”, “Tornado diagram” will not appear in Rita but it appears in PMBOK and appeared few times in the actual exam  If you are one of those guys who cannot buy expensive flash cards then the simplest way that worked for me is get to the index of PMBOK. You will surely see more than 20 items that you never came across before. This is an important trick to verify. Please try this and you will find its importance.”Mukundan’s Lessons Learned

“Started off with PMBOK but it took me nowhere. PMBOK was the best sleeping pill I had”

The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try, Fifth Edition, Andy Crowe PMP PgMP

From the forum posts, I discovered other test-taking guides and materials, including Andy Crowe’s The PMP Exam, online exams such as Oliver Lehman, and Rita’s PM Fastrack simulation exam software. I incorporated these into my studies.  I adjusted my studying gameplan, taking many of Ashley Larsons approach (thanks Ashley!) into consideration, since her study timeframe and approach were similar to mine. • Test yourself, test yourself, test yourself – you can read theory from books but it is sufficient for CAPM exam. PMP exam is based on situational questions – so you need to test yourself. You can find hundreds of questions on internet – unfortunately very often in bad quality.  If you are able to detect the bad quality, you are prepared for exam  http://www.pmhub.net/wp/2011/01/jiri-khun-my-pmp-exam-lessons-learned-5-1-2011/
