John P. Reiling, PMP: How to Win With the Multiple Certification Strategy

Should you earn a certification? If so, which one first? Which one is best after that?

These are all valid questions!

Many report that so many people have the PMP certification that it’s not a big thing to have it…but is if you DON’T!

What’s the reality out there, and how can you play it to your advantage?

It’s great to earn the PMP or any other certifications. You’ll learn, refresh your skill set, open possiblities for yourself…and won’t be eliminated from some job possibilities because you don’t have it.

But how can you take a fresh look, 360 degree look at this and determine your next step?

First, do an inventory of your own core differentiators in the marketplace. Here’s a start for what to think about:

  1. Industry expertise
  2. Specific technical skills by education or experience
  3. Specific functional skills
  4. Specific company or organization experience
  5. Experience with certain types of projects

The opportunity of certification is that it gives you a new chance to differentiate yourself from the pack, and it’s all up to you!

Here are some examples of some certifications that project managers can earn that would help differentiate them in the marketplace:

  1. PRINCE2 Foundation
  2. Agile PMI-ACP
  3. Business Analysis certification
  4. ITIL Foundation
  5. IT certifications

An extra benefit is that when you earn a “business” certification, you will generally also earn PDUs if you’re currently a PMP.

So, whether you are just starting out, or are well along in your career, carefully consider your strategy to define and re-define yourself in the marketplace. It is a way that you can take control of your future.
