LATEST UPDATE July 22, 2011 - 38 days to go and this is the latest update
On Tuesday July 19th, REPs were informed by PMI that there are additional significant changes to the PMP exam and results measuring system after the new exam begins on August 31st, 2011.
Amongst these and perhaps the most significant change is the decision by PMI to hold test scores for students within the first 4 to 6 weeks of taking the exam after August 31, 2011. Currently, students receive immediate notification of their scores upon completion of the exam.
Students who sit for the exam within the first 4-6 week period after August 31st, will receive email notification from PMI once their test scores are ready.
If you are unable to sit for the PMP exam before August 31st, and need to take the exam before mid October (no exact date has been specified by PMI as of print time), you will be required to wait the 4-6 week waiting period for your exam results. If you have an employment opportunity that is awaiting your PMP exam results, you should speak with your employer to discuss your options and the additional required wait time.
Please contact PMI if you have further questions regarding this change: PMI contact:
PMHUB comments: The original changes was announced last October and republished here to warn PMHUB members of the coming changes this August 31. From our point of view, it will be better if this change is introduced together with the implementation of the PMP Exam based on PMBOK 5. rather than having 2 changes within the period.
As a current credential holder how does this impact me? Are there any changes for renewing my credential?
If you currently hold the PMP credential, the release of the new RDS has limited impact for yousince the primary result of the RDS is to update the PMP examination. PMI will review the results of this RDS to determine whether it requires updates be made to the PMP Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. PMI expects that any changes to this program will be announced in Q4 2010.
When will the changes to the PMP examination take place?
The new examination is scheduled to be released on 31 August 2011. This means that the last day to take the current PMP examination is 30 August 2011. Candidates who would like to take the current version of the examination are advised to schedule their examinations early to better ensure that they are able to obtain a test date before the examination update.
Are the eligibility criteria (contact hours / project management experience hours) changing?
No – the eligibility criteria will remain the same. Only the multiple-choice examination contentof the PMP is changing
What version of a Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®Guide)should I study for the updated PMP examination?
The update of the examination for the new RDS does not affect the PMBOK®Guide, so candidates should continue to study the Fourth Edition, as well as other current project management titles.
Is there going to be a change to the PMBOK®Guide—Fourth Edition?
No. The update of the examination to align with the new RDS does not affect the PMBOK®Guide
Will the score report be changing?
At this time, PMI does not anticipate any changes will be made to the PMP score report.
Will PMI provide a full refund if I am unable to take the exam before the new exam is released?
No. PMI is announcing the change to the PMP examination approximately 11 months before it is implemented so that all PMP candidates have the time required to take the examination before it is updated.
Will PMI have expanded scheduling options at the test centers to ensure that allcandidates can take the exam prior to updates taking place?
PMI is working with our testing partner, Prometric
Will There Be Significant Differences Between the Existing Exam and the New One?
Approximately 30% of the PMP exam content will change as a result of new or substantial changes to reflect the project manager's role as defined by the recent study. Changes to the exam will be implemented through existing items being updated as appropriate, new examination items being developed to meet these requirements, and old items that do not meet the criteria being retired.
Also, certain areas of the examination will be tested in a different way because an existing domain was seen to be common across all content areas of the examination. Specifically, the Professional and Social Responsibility content area (Domain 6) will now be tested in every domain, rather than as a separate domain on the examination.
What is the Release Date of the New Exam?
A new version of the PMP® exam will be placed into worldwide use for any and all PMI® credential examinations taken on or after August 31st, 2011. Is this New Exam a Result of Changes to The PMBOK® Guide? No. Exam takers should continue to reference A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge—Fourth Edition (2008) until a new PMBOK® Guide is released, around 2012.
Will There Be Changes to the Eligibility Criteria, Application Process, or Passing Score?
According to PMI, the education and experience requirements that define the eligibility for the existing PMP examination remain appropriate and will not be changed.
What Are You Supposed to Do Now?
Although PMI is planning on changing approximately 30% of the PMP® examination, these changes will NOT be effective until August 31st of 2011. Therefore, any students planning to sit for the exam before August 31st of 2011 must continue to use currently available, non-updated materials. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential examination will be updated in 2011, based on updates to the professional role of a PMP® recently found in PMI’s Role Delineation Study (RDS).
What do I need to know about the changes to the PMP credential and examination?
The process for updating the PMP begins with the RDS, which is now complete. Learn more about the RDS. These updates to the role do have an effect on the examination questions for the PMP, and will be reflected in the PMP examination starting 31 August 2011.
